C., THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1946 Negroes Are Sentenced In Assault Case Wesley Jones, his wife, Annie JLee Jones, and Willie Clark, all negroes, were tried in Halifax I‘ County Recorder’s Court Tuesday [ on charges growing out of a fight Thursday night, February 7 in ! front of the Hotel Weldon, in which Weldon’s Chief of Police, P. R. Kitchin, was “ganged up” on by the negroes. All three were found guilty of assaulting an officer and resist ing arrest. Jones was also found %iilty of driving while drunk and fined $75 and costs, his license f was revoked and he was sentenced to the roads for 12 months, with sl capias to be issued any time within two years if he is found in Halifax County. Annie Lee. was sentenced to i eight months in jail and Clark drew four months on the roads. These two gave notice of appeal ■ jx> the Superior Court. Dr. Sprinkle Will Speak In County Dr. Henry C. "Well, you just put a piece in that paper and tell those jurors and the rest of the people that Halifax County Superior Court will open on Monday, March 18, and that Judge John J. Crutchfield Now In Korea Maj. Eugene B. Crutchfield, 34 former engineer for the Virginii Electric and Power Co., is nov serving as commanding officer O she 28th Military Governmen Company in Korea. Entering the Army in Februarj 1942, at Ft. Dix, NeV Jersey, a a, First Lieutenant, Maj. Crutch field remained there as part of th 551st Signal Bn. He has been sta tioned at several camps through out the country, including th Army Air Forces School in Or lando, Fla., and the school o Military Government at Charlottes ville. In November 1942, he wa promoted to Captain and in Aug ust, 1943, to Major. He left th States for overseas duty in Nov ember, 1944. Maj. Crutchfield hold the Bronze /Star Medal and th Philippine Military Merit Medal. Maj. Crutchfield is a graduat of North Carolina State Colleg of Agriculture and Engineering i the class of 1933. He is a men ber of the Tau Beta, F. and A. h and the National Sojourners. His wife, the former Eugeni Johnson, and son, are living £ 205 North Spring Street, Winstor Salem. His mother, Mrs. T. She! lives in Roanoke Rapids. To Meet Tuesday The Nurses Alumnae Associatio will meet at the Roanoke Rent: Nurses home Tuesday, March 6,1 8 o’clock. Dr. Adkins Passes Away In Florida Dr. Elmer Hall Adkins, 63, form erly employed here by the Rose mary Manufacturing Company as a physician, and who was well known and loved by many people here, died at his Miami Beach (Fla.) home last Friday a/ter an illness of six days. Dr. Adkins left Roanoke Rapids in 1915 and practiced at the Mayo Clinic for a while, later going to Chattanooga, Tenn. Since 1924 he had been one of the chief sur geons on the staff of St. Francis Hospital in Miami Beach and was a member of the hospital’s advis ory board. Rotarians To Sponsor Big Bingo Party The Roanoke Rapids Rotary Club will sponsor a Bingo Party i in' the local high school cafeteria . during the week of March 25 l through March 30, it was announc . ed this week. Plans were complet ed at last Tuesday’s regular week ly meeting of the club. The hours • for playing will be from 7:30 to > 11 P. M. Rogers Producing Company of Fostoria, Ohio, will arrive in Roanoke Rap ids this week-end to begin work on the Kiwanis Minstrel, “This Is It,” to be staged in the Roanoke Rapids High School Auditorium on the nights of March 21 and 22. The show will be a gala Minstrel Musical Revue. Tryouts for the cast will begin next Monday at '7:30 P. M., in the lunch room of the Junior High School Building. Local Red Cross Chapter To Hold Meetina Tuesdav Niaht M ** The annual meeting of the Ro noke Rapids Chapter of the Ameri cjn Red Cross will be held next Tuesday at 7:30 o'clock in the Municipal Building, it was an nounced today by Rev. Gordon L Price, chapter chairman. This meeting will officially launch the 1946 Red Cross cam paign for funds in Roanoke Rap ids. The quota for the campaign* which will run from March 5 through the 16th, is set at $8,500. Since two very excellent films on the future plans and activities of the Red Cross will be shows and board members for the com ing year will be elected, said Mr, Price, it is most important that the public as well as the cam paign workers attended this meet ing. Silver Star Is Awarded Leatherwood Pfc. H. Charles Leatherwood, Jr.* who was killed in action in Mes chede, Germany, on 13 ApriL 1946, has been awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for gal lantry in action near Fmkfurt* Germany, on March 27, 1945, ac cording to a letter received from the Adjutant General. The letter is as follows: “I have the honor to inform you that, by direction of the President, the Silver Star has been posthum ously awarded to your son, Pfc. Hilliard Charles Leatherwood, Jr, Field Artillery. The citation is a* follows: For gallantry in action on 27 March, 1946, in Frankfurt-on-main, Germany, when enemy artillery shelled the area in which his sec tion was operating, Pfc. Leather wood, a driver, disregarding per sonal safety, went to assist hi* superior officer in obtaining a shell report. Although warned by his officer of the danger, and ad vised not to expose himself, Pfc. Leatherwood accompanied his of ficer to a crater and assisted him, while under intense enemy fire^ until both, he and his officer were wounded. Then before seeking aid for himself, he assisted the officer to the aid station. His heroic act ions reflect great credit upon him self and exemplify the highest traditions of the military service.** Charles was the son of Mrs. H. C. Robertson of Petersburg, Va. He attended Roanoke Rapids schools for several years and par ticipated in several sports. He has a brother, Robert, who is now serving in the armed forces. Eight Men Are Recruited Here Eight men were recruited into the Army during the past week from Roanoke Rapids and vicinity, it was announced today by M/Sgt. Motin J. Hite, Jr. They were sent to Fort Bragg for final examina tion. Those enlisting were: Aubreity T. Morgan, Seaboard; William M. Dunn, Scotland Neck; Lonnie Al vin Vaughan, James R. Clark, James A. Harrell, Raymond H. France, Burchill B. Smith and Gail C. King, all from Roanoke Rapids. . . . .
